While the oil cleansing method might be new to some, using oil to clean the skin has actually been around for thousands of years. Seemingly counterintuitive, especially those with skin more on the oilier spectrum, however it’s actually great for all skin types, including acne prone skin.

Using a cleansing oil allows the good bacteria to stay intact on the surface of your skin, maintaining the skin’s natural pH balance, and leaving your natural acid mantle as it should be.

So how does it work? Well, like we learned in school chemistry -Like attracts like. When applied to the skin, a cleansing oil attaches to and draws out imbalanced sebum, dirt, buildup and impurities. Excellent at removing makeup, including eye makeup, as well as sunscreen.

We love Kari Gran’s Essential Cleansing Oil, Josh Rosebrook’s Herbal Infusion Oil and Mara's Algae Enzyme Cleansing Oil.

Method -

  1. Start with a dry face. You want to use enough so there’s a good slip, and that you’re not tugging on your skin.
  2. Massage the oil on your face and neck, including your eye area. Take the time to do this, it’s a good chance to slow down and turn this into a self-care ritual; notice where you’re holding tension, cup your hands over your nose and take in the beautiful smell of the oils. Massaging for longer is also good for blood circulation and lymph drainage.
  3. Apply a warm washcloth to your face, holding it there for a moment to activate the oils, before gently wiping away the oil. Repeat until the oil is completely removed. We recommend using a clean washcloth each day. We also prefer oil cleansing at night with a lighter cleanser in the morning (like Josh Rosebrook’s Complete Moisture Cleanse), however you may want to see what works for you.
  4. If using Josh Rosebrook, follow with Hydrating Accelerator and Vital Balm Cream, or if using the Kari Gran Essential System, follow with Hydrating Tonic and Essential Serum – your skin will be left feeling clean, hydrated and nourishingly smooth.
